How we Grade at Obi Studios

Every pre-owned record we sell is visually inspected, carefully cleaned and graded. Where necessary, we also play-test records to help assess their condition.

Our philosophy is simple: if we’re unsure between two grades, we’ll always choose the lower grade and price the record accordingly.

We grade the sleeve and record separately, clearly labelling each in the listing. For example:

Sleeve: VG+ / Record: VG

This means the sleeve is Very Good Plus and the record is Very Good. Any significant faults or missing extras will be noted in the description.

Mint (M)

Perfect in every way, with no signs of use or handling. We use this grade very sparingly, particularly for second-hand records.

New sealed records are described as “New & sealed”. The vinyl inside has not been inspected or play-tested, and being sealed does not guarantee a flawless record. Any visible damage to the outer sleeve will be noted.

Near Mint (NM)

An exceptionally well-cared-for record showing little, if any, evidence of use. The vinyl should have no significant surface marks and should play with minimal background noise.

Sleeves should show virtually no signs of wear.

This is our highest grade for most used records.

Excellent (EX)

A clean copy showing only light signs of careful use. The vinyl may have one or two very light hairlines or surface marks that should not noticeably affect playback.

The sleeve may show minimal storage wear, light corner wear or a tiny crease, but nothing that significantly detracts from its overall appearance.

Very Good Plus (VG+)

A well-looked-after record with light signs of use. The vinyl may have a few light marks or occasional faint background noise but should still provide an enjoyable listening experience.

Sleeves may show light ring wear, minor corner bumps, small creases or slight fading.

A good choice for everyday listening and collectors looking for value.

Very Good (VG)

A used record with noticeable surface marks and audible background noise, particularly during quieter passages. It should still provide an enjoyable listen without skipping or sticking.

Sleeves may show more obvious wear, seam splits, writing or heavier creasing.

A solid play copy for those more interested in the music than perfection.

Good Plus (G+) / Good (G)

A well-worn record with significant surface noise and visible scratches, but which should play through without skipping or sticking. G+ indicates a copy in slightly better condition than G.

Sleeves may have substantial wear, seam splits, writing or other damage. Any known warps or significant playback faults will be described in the listing.

Fair (F) / Poor (P)

A record with significant wear or damage that may skip, stick or be unsuitable for normal listening. Any copies offered in these grades will have their known faults clearly described.

Sleeves in these grades may be badly torn, heavily worn or otherwise seriously damaged. A missing sleeve will be stated separately and does not determine the vinyl’s grade.
